Civil War Strategies
In this activity you are going to have an opportunity to study the various factors involved in the Civil War strategies of the Union and the Confederacy. You will need to consider the various strengths and weaknesses of both sides and each side's war aims. First you need to select a partner. One of you will need to be an advisor to President Abraham Lincoln and the other will be a close advisor to the Confederate President, Jefferson Davis. You need to help your President develop a strategy for winning the war. On Friday, the two of you will present your strategy to the class. You may have maps or any other materials which you feel are important to demonstrating your overall war aims. After both of you have presented your strategies, the class will decide whose strategy would be most successful. You need to keep some important facts in mind while presenting your strategy. If your opponent is able to find errors in your strategy or strengths and/or weakness that you have left out, it will lessen your chance of success. Be sure to recognize your opponents assets, but find a way to be victorious with your own capabilities. Remember, the North must win an absolute victory to bring the South back in to the Union. The South, however, needs only to force a stalemate from which they can make the North accept them as their own nation. For more information look on pages 501-502 of your textbook.
